The World of Woodblock Printmaking
-
Chromoxylographers of the world - Unite!
The [Baren] forum is a mailing list open to anyone with an interest in the fascinating world of woodblock printmaking. Its main purpose is to encourage a flow of information among members and provide a place where they can share their knowledge and experience. Although many of the discussions are naturally based on technical points of the woodblock printmaking craft, general 'philosophical' issues also play an important part in the communications.
A baren is the 'pad' used by printmakers to apply pressure to the paper when it is in place on the woodblock. A wonderful tool made of simple materials - paper, lacquer and bamboo - it is extremely strong, yet capable of incredibly delicate nuance. The baren is the very core of traditional woodblock printmaking, and there can be no better symbol for this forum.
If you feel that you could benefit from being a member of [Baren], and feel that you have something to offer the group, please join us; we would love to have you!

George E. Thompson
Professor of Art & Design
- There are examples of several typefaces I've designed and some
information about my private press, Spurius Press, as well as a couple
of examples of design work and a resume which is mostly about my
teaching activites. The typefaces run the gamut from a sans version of
Dick Isbell's Americana face & a type family based on Oldrich Menhart's
work to some quirkier things that were designed for clent jobs. The
Spurius Press page has a brief piece about the type cutter/designer
Robert Wiebking, about whom I'm still doing research (anybody has
information on him I'd be happy to hear it--currently trying to
trackdown members of the family in hopes they have more info), and some
pages out of the biggest project to date: Five American Type Designers,
a piece two students and I did about Cynthia Hollndsworth, Kris Holmes,
Zuzana Licko, Judith Sutcliffe and Carol Twombly. This was printed on a
C & P 10" x 15" using polymer plates.

- LUST
- the missing piece of the puzzle.
When you have almost finished the puzzle, you discover that there is one small, lousy piece missing. This is the moment LUST wants to capture, because this is the moment something basic is going to happen. Whether you start searching until you find the missing piece, or you throw away the puzzle altogether. Both options are a thousand times more interesting than the moment the puzzle is finished, because when that happens, there is nothing more. However, what you will remember the thing that indelibly stays with you is that puzzle with the hole: the part asking for interpretation. LUST is a term that cannot be clearly defined. LUST concerns the difference between RATIO and COINCIDENCE, between vision and urge. From the multiplication of these terms, designs emerge that have often an autonomous character, yet almost always have a relation with previous LUST designs. LUST designs & philosophy do not emerge from style but from interpretation and conceptualization of the assignment. LUST is mainly interested in CONTEXT and ASSOCIATION.
This site offers you a peek into our world called LUST. LUST has given this world a tangiable structure that should challenge, as well as, guide you through all the layers of our thought processes. LUST has built in many hidden or random links and elements into this world, so be curious and explore your way through it! No one interpretation of LUST is correct. Your conclusion is just as valid as anyones. LUST is, after all, personal. Everybody carries their own baggage with them. LUST respects your baggage, but at the same time would like to show you theirs. LUST wants to try to push you, encourage you to participate in this dialog until the transformation takes place towards personal insight, personal investigation, and personal conclusions within LUST.

- IL BISONTE,
-
International School of Graphic Arts in Florence, Italy. ("The INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF GRAPHIC ARTS was established in 1983
with master printers and teachers who offer the students relationships based on
exchange of knowledge and experience. Many of the school’s graduates over the past
years have gone on to teaching careers in famous art institutes and academies
throughout Italy. Many have transferred the credits earned at Il Bisonte to their home
universities. All of them, however, have gained in artistic and cultural maturity.
Famous artists as visiting professors are already a tradition at the school, and they work
on their own creations right before their students. The "End of Year" students' exhibit is
also part of the special atmosphere at Il Bisonte; and the best of the students have the
opportunity to print their first editions. This bon à tirer is the step that leads them from
the world of schools into the professional art world. A few lines will never be enough to
describe the character and atmosphere of a school such as Il BISONTE. It has to be
experienced firsthand in the classrooms: that blend of eagerness on the part of the
students, worthy of the finest colleges, and the simple, direct familiarity typical of
Florentine artisan workshops where master and apprentice often eat at the same table
during their break.")

PenUltimate is a typeface design group that is based in Seabrook, Texas. Now in their fourth year of typeface designs they are just beginning to receive recognition from designers for our inventive, creative designs. Currently they have nine typefaces available through [T-26] in Chicago (312.787.TYPE), and soon some more typefaces will be available through Prototype. All other typefaces are ready for licencing from PenUltimate.
