Dieter Freyers Paper Pages
two sites, one man, lots about papermaking

This weeks "Site of the Week" is actually made of two sites; both about papermaking and it's history but assembled by one person, Dieter Freyer. Although one of the sites was already in our "latest-new"-section we decided to put both sites in the spotlight again: the older site (Büttenpapier) has improved quite a bit, and the new one (Eine Kleine Papiergeschichte) is complementary to the other. (One little remark: so far the latter is only in German, but what the heck....)

So here we go, either to one or to the other.....

You can start to learn about history of paper and papermaking process, have a look at museums and historic papermills conserving the ancient craft of hand papermaking. Various instructions how to make your own homemade paper may encourage you to try forming your first sheets of paper.

The old skill of making paper by hand has not vanished or reduced to hobby-craft. The list of contemporary producers has grown to such a length, that it was necessary to split by countries in order not to get lost in the rich supply of links. Even in our days papermills founded some hundred years ago are producing fine quality of handmade paper appreciated by artists. Also new firms established within the last few years find a wide range of interested customers for their excellent handmade paper.

Some glossaries will help you to understand the jargon of papermakers from ancient days up to modern papermaking. Various items related to handmade paper, but not realy fitting to one of the above chapters, you will find on a separate page.
